| Q:what is the valve stem seal ? |
| A: Valve stem seals provide a defined metering rate of oil to the valve stem interface of internal combustion engines to lubricate the valve guide and minimize engine emissions. They are available for diesel and gas--oline engines with and without boosting. |
| Q: How many years do valve stem seals last? |
| Valve stem seals often last more than 150,000 miles under normal driving conditions. Infrequent oil and filter changes may cause valve stem seals to fail prematurely. Improper installation often causes valve stem seals to fail shortly after installation. |
| Q:What causes valve seal failure? |
| A:Large Pressure Fluctuations at the Pump Inlet The sealing surface can't be removed, so it can burn out and lead to sealing failure. Once the pressure at the pump inlet becomes too high, the pressure in the pump cavity increases past the sealing's limit, and the valve sealing fails. |
| Q:Can you replace valve stem seals without removing head? |
| A:Yes, I've done a few that way…. put the piston at BDC, pull the spark plug, and stuff as much small rope into the cylinder as you can, then rotate the engine backwards to push the piston up, smashing the rope and that will keep the valve from falling out. Then you can remove the valve spring and replace the seals. |
| Q:What causes a bad valve stem? |
| Lack of oil or a breakdown of the oil film can result in stem scoring and scuffing. Temporary poor lubrication coverage when cold starting in sub-zero temperatures can be similarly problematic. Bent valve stems due to slipped or incorrect valve timing, or piston-to-valve collision due to over-speed in valve bounce. |
