Metal Case and Spring Materials

      One of the components of a shaft seal is the metal case.Standard shaft seals are made from a carbon steel metal case.However, if the application involves operating in a corrosive environment or extreme conditions,the metal case can be made out of stainless steel.In addition to the metal case,another component of some seals is a garter spring.
     
      A garter spring is included in the seal if it is intended to seal a media with a low viscosity-such as oil.A garter spring is not included with the seal if it is intended to seal amedia with a high viscosity-such as grease.Garter springs are typically made from carbon steel,however,they too can be made out of stainless steel if the application requires.All of our metal cases and springs are made from SAE grade metals as shown in the table below.

Troubleshooting and Seal Failure Review
Symptom	Probable    cause	Possible solution
Hardening or brittleness on seal lip	Oyer heating	Check shaft speed and temperature,reduce if possible
	Inadequate lubrication	Provide proper lubrication prior to assembly or upgrade seal material and/or style
	Shaft finish is too smooth	A shaft finish that is under the recommended range will cause excessive heat at higher speeds,increase finish to be within 10 20 Ra
Excessive wear on sealing lip (around whole circumference)	Seal inside diameter too smallor shaft is too big	Check if seals inside diameter and shafts outside diameter are within specifcations prior to assembly
	Seal is exposed to excessive pressure	Provide proper venting to reduce pressure,or change design to compensate for excessive pressure
	Shaft finish is too rough	Shaft finish should be between 10-20 Ra to reduce excessive wear to the sealing lip
Excessive wear on only one side of sealing lip	Misalignment between shaft and housing	Reduce misalignment to be within the allowable amount
Seal lip has cuts,nicks,or tears	Improper installatior	Use proper installation methods which would include protecting the sealing lip while being installed over the shaft
	Shaft not prepared properly	Ensure shaft's clean and free of any burrs or contaminates that might interfere with the sealing lip
	Defective seal	Check for any defects or inconsistencies on the sealing lip prior to assembly

Sealing lip leakage	Garter spring damaged or distorted	Reduce excessive stretching when installing the seal;this will reduce the chance of distorting the spring
	Garter spring popped off	Check the lead-in chamfer or radius to make sure it falls within the recommended range
	Seal cocked in housing	Check installation and installation tool to ensure the seal is being installed perpendicular to the shaft
	Shaft lead present	Plunge grind the shaft to eliminate any lead that may be present
	Excessive shaft runout or misalignment	Reduce the amount of runout and/or misalignment to be within the allowable amount the seal can handle
	Damaged primary lip	Check for any defects or inconsistencies on the sealing lip and the shaft prior to assembly
Leakage from the outside diameter	Seal and/or housing is out-of round	Reduce the amount of out-of-roundness to be within the allowable amount.A rubber OD seal could compensate for a slight amount of out-of-roundness
	Seal cocked in housing	Check installation and installation tool to ensure the seal is being installed perpendicular to the shaft
	Scratches or imperfections in housing and/or lead-in chamfer	Clean housing and/or lead-in chamfer with emery cloth
